OSPI/CTE Policy
Training Requirements and Funding Criteria for Applied Math 2009‐2010
- Applied Math/OSPI Policy for Initial and Continuing Applied Math Certification
- Requirements for Applied Math Career & Technical Education Funding
-
Initial Training: Teachers need to successfully complete Initial Training and the following Fall/Spring In‐services to be certified. Training is offered each summer by the Washington
Applied Math Council; the In‐services are offered during the year, following participation in
the Initial Training. The Fall and Spring In‐services are offered in collaboration with the Office of
Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI).
(Note: The certification remains solely with the teacher and not with the school or district.)
2. Fall/Spring In‐service Participation: Teachers need to be given time to attend both the Fall and Spring one‐day In‐services provided by the Washington Applied Math Council. These in‐services are offered currently at Saint Martin’s University, Lacey for Western Washington, and Spokane Community
College for Eastern Washington. Carl Perkins and CTE state funds may be used to pay for teachers’
expense.
3. Continued Funding Requirements: After participation in the Initial and Fall/Spring trainings, the instructor needs to attend either a WAMC/OSPI Summer Conference Training at least once every five years or accumulate a total of forty clock hours by attending the Fall/Spring one‐day In‐services over a
five year period to acquire continued certification. Summer Training needs to occur within a two‐ year period prior to CTE re‐certification. Additionally, the teacher needs to meet the minimum
requirements and expectations as determined by the Washington Applied Math Council in
conjunction with the OSPI CTE department to meet the CTE funding requirements. This will ensure all Applied Math Endorsed teachers are aligned with the 9-12 Math Standards, have updated curriculum that is aligned with the GLEs, and are aware of other changes in the requirements. Carl Perkins and CTE state funds may be used to pay for teachers’ expenses.
4. Proof of Certification: Prior to the start of the school year, the district needs to provide OSPI/WAMC
with the name, current school address, telephone number (home and work), and email address for all teachers receiving funding for Applied Math. Districts also need to provide a copy of a valid Career & Technical Education teaching certificate (CTE Certificate number). Enhanced Career & Technical
Education funding is available for those courses in which the CTE instructor has the appropriate and current training.
5. Number of Classes Allowed: Unlimited classes may be funded with commensurate appropriate training. Classes need to align to the Applied Math Framework and the 9-12 Math Standards. For a school to receive funding for Advanced Applied Math classes, the teacher needs to have Advanced Certification (obtainable by one additional Summer Conference.)
